1999 - Lisa Colvin

October 26, 2006

Lisa is another California native, and has always lived neared Los Angeles with the exception of a 5 year stint on Catalina Island.  She received at BA in Communication from USC in 1990, her MLIS from UCLA in 1999 and currently holds the position of Manager, Information Architecture and Usability at Spot Runner, Inc. Over the last few years she’s had the privilege to work with a number of different companies as diverse as Disney and Countrywide.  Her professional passion is the design of the online and application-based user experience in all forms.  She’s professionally active with IAI, ASIST (SIG-IA), IXDA, ACM (SIG-CHI), AIGA (SIG-Experience Design), and loves to attend conferences and talk shop. Plus, she still finds time to serve on the Rose Bowl Aquatics Club Board of Directors (Water Polo) where her son plays and volunteer for the PTA. In her spare time, Lisa can be found reading, prowling flea markets, playing with her English Mastiff or freezing poolside at a water polo game. Feel free to drop her a line at Lisa@lisacolvin.net.

1993 - John Sims

October 20, 2006

From the Aged Alumni Division, I send greetings. I got my MLS at Kentucky in the 70’s, but left the profession early on. In the early 90’s, after an unspectacular stint as a carpenter and homebuilder, I decided to get back into librarianship. To my astonishment I was admitted to the UCLA GSLIS [this was 1992] Post-MLS program.  Upon graduation in 1993 I began a career in federal libraries, first as a medical librarian in various VA and DOD facilities; then, since 1999, as a science and engineering librarian at the US Patent and Trademark Office in the DC area. I am presently Team Leader of an Electronic Information Center, with a staff of 9 or so including librarians, technical information specialists, information technology resource providers and others. It is no exaggeration to say that I owe my career success in large part to the good faculty and staff of UCLA’s GSLIS, who took a chance on a not-so-promising candidate and gave him back the competence and confidence of his true
calling. I have tried very hard not to disappoint them.

2004 - Teresa Bocanegra

Hi, I’m Teresa Bocanegra Class of June 2004.   Currently, I’m working in Selection Services at the Dallas Public Library (DPL).  Two weeks after graduating from UCLA, I started a position as a Youth Librarian at a DPL branch , then in February 2006, moved to Selection Services at Central where I am the Coordinator for all ordering as well as a “Centralized” Collection Development Librarian for youth fiction and media.  DPL has 23 branches (and a few preparing for openings) plus a Central Library with 8 floors.  At the moment, we are in the process of reviewing ILS vendors to replace DRA Classic.  As for the following story below, I don’t know where this might fit in the blog, but it’s a fun story that happened earlier in the month:

I went to Rick Springfield’s show in Tulsa OK last Wednesday 10/4 then to Stafford TX on Friday 10/6. I have this shirt I’ve started to wear to the shows that says "Librarian Loves Rick"

On Friday, early into the show Rick saw me and pointed & smiled while he sang, then a couple of songs later he actually STOPPED his singing and pointed at me asking "Are you a librarian?" (I nodded yes). Then he said "You know that’s kinda hot. Librarians are really hot." (During the show, he pointed at me a few times and sang to me - I was on the third row).

So, it’s official - we are hot ok - Rick says so - it must be true right? tehe.

2003 - Sarah Mae Harper

Sarah Mae Harper grew up in the Washington, D.C. area. She received a BA in Spanish from McDaniel (formerly Western Maryland) College where she also completed a self-designed minor in Library Science. In 2001 she moved out to California to attend UCLA. She completed her MLIS in 2003 with a concentration in Youth Services and Public Libraries. She was hired by the County of Los Angeles in August 2003 as a Reference Librarian at the South Whittier Community Library. She now works as a YA/Children’s Librarian at the AC Bilbrew Community Library.

1967 - Sue Kamm

Lawrence Clark Powell, Andrew Horn, Robert Hayes, Seymour Lubetzky, and Betty Rosenberg were among the faculty when I attended the School of Library Service [sic] in 1966-67. Since earning my MLS, I have worked primarily in public libraries: County of Los Angeles, Los Angeles Public, and – for the past 15+ years – at Inglewood Public Library. I’m head of audio-visual and stack maintenance/security, and spend time on the adult reference desk as well as cataloging our AV collection.

I’ve been an ALA Councilor-at-Large for three terms, and, being a glutton for punishment.  I’ll be running for re-election as a petition candidate. I’ve served on several ALA, division, and round table boards and committees.

In addition to book reviews, I’ve had several articles published in professional literature, including “To Join or Not to Join: How Librarians Make Membership Decisions About Their Associations.” Library Trends 46(2): (1997) and  ”Grow Up,” Library Journal 124.18 (Nov 1, 1999). Dean Powell told me to go out and raise hell. I have tried to follow that advice throughout my professional career. My most prestigious honor was being chosen as “Truest of the Blue” by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2000.

2005 - Elizabeth Spatz

October 16, 2006

After receiving her B.A. in painting, sculpture and graphic arts, Libby started work as a photo archivist at the Getty Museum in 1981. During her career at the Getty she held positions as a curatorial assistant, an archivist, and a technical systems manager. After 20 years she came to the conclusion that she wanted to work more closely with primary research materials. She began graduate studies at UCLA’s GSE&IS in 2003, emphasizing work in archival studies and taking advantage of internships and employment at various local institutions such as the Palos Verdes Public Library, Walt Disney Imagineering Library, and UCLA’s Special Collections department in the Young Research Library. After graduating in 2005 and taking a brief break to go sailing in the Cook Islands and New Zealand, she returned to work in UCLA’s Special Collections, where she’s been processing arts-oriented collections since January 2006.

2006 - Rebecca Cohen

Rebecca began the PhD program in education at the USC Rossier School of Education in the fall of 2006. She received her B.A. in History from UC Berkeley and MLIS from UCLA. Rebecca also works as a research associate with the USC Center on Educational Governance, and research assistant with the UCLA Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing.

2006 - Christine Megowan

After 19 years of continuous studenthood (Kindergarten thru MLIS), I entered the work force as a rare books cataloger at UC San Diego’s Mandeville Special Collections Library.  Other areas of interest include preservation/conservation and promoting access to special collections materials.  Recreational interests include historical costuming, crafts in general, Norse/Viking culture, and gothic literature.
