1994 - Joel Tochterman
(Update Received April 27, 2007; Original Posting Dec. 4, 2006}
Shortly after graduating with a MLS from UCLA in 1994, I moved to the Washington, DC area. I envisioned being a law librarian in a law firm somewhere. Instead, I found work through federal government contractors. I worked on contracts for the National Institutes of Health and the Environmental Protection Agency. The most interesting contract was when I was the Librarian for the National Center for Complementary & Alternative Medicine Clearinghouse. After my 2nd year in DC, I married my long time girl friend. We now have two active, playful boys who are 8 and 3 years old. We were motivated to move back to Sacramento so our kids could be close to grandma and papa. I was fortunate to find a job at a charter school formed by school friend, former NBA star Kevin Johnson. It was a challenge working with kids who have experienced so much already (gangs, drugs, teen-age pregnancy, abusive parents, etc.). In 2007, I got a job as a Librarian for the California Department of Housing & Community Development—in Sacramento.
