1993 - John Sims

October 20, 2006

From the Aged Alumni Division, I send greetings. I got my MLS at Kentucky in the 70’s, but left the profession early on. In the early 90’s, after an unspectacular stint as a carpenter and homebuilder, I decided to get back into librarianship. To my astonishment I was admitted to the UCLA GSLIS [this was 1992] Post-MLS program.  Upon graduation in 1993 I began a career in federal libraries, first as a medical librarian in various VA and DOD facilities; then, since 1999, as a science and engineering librarian at the US Patent and Trademark Office in the DC area. I am presently Team Leader of an Electronic Information Center, with a staff of 9 or so including librarians, technical information specialists, information technology resource providers and others. It is no exaggeration to say that I owe my career success in large part to the good faculty and staff of UCLA’s GSLIS, who took a chance on a not-so-promising candidate and gave him back the competence and confidence of his true
calling. I have tried very hard not to disappoint them.
