1998 - Norman Buchwald

May 22, 2008

Since I graduated in 1998, I spent a couple of years in a number of part-time positions at different institutions such as California State University, Northridge, El Segundo Public Library and the University of Arizona.  Since 2000, I have been the Information Literacy and Technology Librarian at Chabot College, a community college, in Hayward, California.  I achieved tenure in 2004.  I have been serving on the Electronic Access and Resources Committee for California Community Colleges since 2003, Secretary of California Clearinghouse on Library Instruction (CCLI) since 2006, and Secretary of East Bay for Democracy, (a grassroots Progressive Democratic club) also since 2006.  I also serve on a number of committees at my college including the Web Portal Planning Core Committee, the Distance Education Committee, and the Technology Committee. When I am not maintaining or creating web pages, reviewing, evaluating, writing and selecting databases, teaching, providing reference, or doing a number of other Library duties,  I try to find time to travel just for fun.  And if I cannot go on a land tour to Scandinavia (as I’ve had in 2007), I do my best to enjoy the sights and sounds of the vibrant Bay Area where I live.  I still hope to get back to my writing (I also have a MFA degree in that), but for now, I continue to read, when I’m not spending way too much time surfing the Web.

1998 - Mary Stark

July 28, 2007

I am working full time as Fine Arts Librarian at Beverly Hills Public Library.  I continued my graduate work at UCLA after completing my library degree, and earned a second Masters degree in Museum Studies in the Art History Department.  A travel award from Arlis Southern California paved the way for me to attend my first national Arlis conference in Atlanta this Spring where I had a lovely visit with Brooke Henderson, class of 1998, also an Art Librarian at Wellesley College.

1998 - Susan Broidy

January 10, 2007

I am a California native and have spent most of my life in Los Angeles. Very prior to coming to UCLA for my MLIS I graduated from UC Berkeley as an Economics major. I worked, married, had two wonderful girls and spent many years working with my husband, Earl, in a family run pharmacy. When we made some changes in our pharmacy I was able to pursue a career change and my wonderful daughter Lisa pointed out how important books and reading have always been to me and that I ought to go to library school. She felt this so strongly that she even had UCLA send me an application. Well, going back to school after all those years was a definite challenge - stressful but very exciting and stimulating. Since graduating I have worked as a Public Library adult reference librarian, first at Santa Monica Public and now for the past 8 years at Los Angeles Public Library, Mid-Valley Regional branch. Mid-Valley is the busiest branch in the system and I do love it. I am fortunate to work with 3 UCLA graduate librarians, two of whom I studied with and the third, I mentored when she was in library school. I have been active in the LIS-AA (UCLA library school alumni association) since graduation. This has been a most rewarding way to keep up my contact with UCLA and I encourage all our alumni to utilize their LIS-AA membership and participate. Out of library hours I still love to read. I play tennis, walk, cook, and travel whenever possible, especially since our youngest daughter, living in Michigan. just had a baby, Grandchildren are a most rewarding hobby!

1998 - Cheryl Stadel-Bevans

December 4, 2006

Prior to coming to UCLA, I studied mathematics at Smith College (A.B.) and the University of Iowa (M.S.) and moved around the world. While earning both degrees, I had worked as a student archival assistant. At UCLA, I focused on archives and was particularly interested in electronic records.

Not long after I graduated from UCLA, my spouse Paul left the Navy, andwe eventually moved to Washington, DC. I have spent my professional career as an electronic records specialist, primarily with the National Archives and Records Administration.

I am also very active with my professional organizations. Most recently, I served on the Nominating Committee for the Society of American Archives and as the Program Co-Chair for the fall meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference. I am also completing mylast year of a six-year term as a member of the Executive Board of the Friends of the Smith College Libraries.

I would love to hear from my classmates and anyone in the DC area (whether you live here or are just visiting). My email address ischeryl.stadelbevans@nara.gov.
